Non-Combustible and Fire-Rated ACP Working in Fire Compliant Harmony

Fire compliance is still a major issue in the Australian construction industry, and although AS1530.1-tested non-combustible products are becoming the norm, building costs do not have to reflect this change. With BCA-based fire engineer advice, a project can be completed with a combination of standard fire-rated and deemed non-combustible products with no visual differences – minimising costs, maximising safety and retaining design integrity.

A recent example of this is the Chermside North Regional Business Centre and Library, designed by Cottee Parker Architects and constructed by Tomkins Commercial. The Greenstar-rated upgrade of the facility now provides a state-of-the-art library and commercial centre in one convenient location.

To complete the project Tomkins Commercial needed non-combustible cladding for BCA compliance. Fairview was able to assist with our AS1530.1-tested Vitracore G2 as well as standard fire-resistant Vitrabond where non-combustible material was not required. This retained the integrity of the design, met compliance requirements and provided the most cost-effective solution for Brisbane City Council as the developer.

As Tomkins Project Manager Howard Sharp explained:

Of particular attraction was the colour finish consistency between the two products. This enabled the non-combustible G2 panel to be laid up to the standard fire rated FR panel.”
